The Sunrise High Sierra Camp, one of six such camps spaced out a day's hike apart, is managed by a group of seasonal employees. The staff prepare and serve meals family style, wash the dishes, clean the cabins, make beds with fresh linens, recycle trash and perform some maintenance chores. The camps are quite popular and fill up each summer with hikers who get dinner, breakfast and a sack lunch for the next day's hike. Lodging is in canvas walled tents and there are communal baths. The Sunrise camp overlooks the stunningly beautiful Sunrise meadow and campers often sit out in the meadow to enjoy the space. Many will walk to a nearby spot to watch the sunset over the Clark range. All the needs of the camp are supplied by pack horses from the valley or Tuolumne Meadows and all the refuse is likewise hauled out. ..Andrea Goodman loading firewood for the cabins. August 1989.
