Fred Shadle, the elder statesman at age 83, historian and backstage manager for the Sacramento Ballet, directs cast soldiers through the door to the stage just prior to their appearance in the Nutcracker ballet on opening night of the annual Christmas season production, Thursday, December 6, 2000. For 20 years Fred Shadle has volunteered his time to work backstage during the ballet season.
