At 81 years-old, Gerry set out to climb El Capitan for a second record-breaking time.

On May 13th, 1999, Gerry was accompanied by Mike Corbett, an expert climbing guide at Yosemite, and cameraman Craig White in hopes of reaching the summit of El Capitan in 7 days. Gerry's first endeavor to climb the 3,000 foot granite wall was a 4 day climb on what was considered to be an "easier" route. At 81, Gerry decided to go for the challenge and take a less traveled and more difficult route up the wall. 11 days later, 4 days longer than expected, the crew arrived to the summit.
