Carl Sharsmith, the elder statesman of rangers in the National Park system and foremost authority on the natural history of the Sierra, was famous for his Tuolumne Meadows environmental walks with visitors eager to hear his stories from 60 years of experience in the park. He was photographed on two occasions, July and September 1989. Mr. Sharsmith died October 14, 1994 at the age of 91.
