Need In the Midst of Plenty: Hunger in California, a project for the Sacramento Bee in 1986-87.
The N.E.E.D.S. Center in Taft, CA provides emergency food and clothing for many residents. The needy line up early in the day, enter and take a number, then what hours to be helped. The center provides basic food items, some are not always available. Ruth Foster, of nearby Fellows, CA waited with other women for her number to be called. A small child gets a cup of hot chocolate and a piece of bread while her mother gets assistance.
