H.I.V. EVICTION CAMP
Fifty families affected by HIV and AIDS were evicted from the Borei Keila neighborhood in central Phnom Penh, Cambodia and recloated 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) to a site known as Tuol Sambo. It is now called Cambodia’s “AIDS colony.”
The colony is nothing more than a series of green corrugated metal buildings with rooms no larger than 8’ x 10.’ Stifling heat and little security are only two of the problems. The colony has no electricity, sewage disposal or running water. One well serves the entire community.
The plight of the residents of the camp has come to the attention of over 100 international human rights and health organizations that are deeply concerned over the situation. A letter written to government officials cites the conditions at the camp as a serious health threat, particularly to people with compromised immune systems.
The residents of the colony who worked in Phnom Penh as day laborers, motorcycle taxi drivers, seamstresses and cleaners have little hope of finding work so far from the city.
