SO. BRONX TENEMENT.JPG
The first mission established in North America by the Missionaries of Charity led by Mother Teresa is located in the South Bronx section of New York City. The Queen of Peace Home offers aid to the poor and homeless who come on a regular basis for meals and a temporary place to live. All the food is donated and the sisters must collect the goods everyday, prepare and serve the meals. The sisters also visit the elderly and offer spiritual comfort. The Missionaries of Charity are extremely publicity shy and allowed the photographer, Jay Mather and a writer, John Long, the first-ever access to the community In June, 1982 prior to the establishment of a new outpost in the Appalachian town of Jenkins, Kentucky. Mother Teresa attended the opening of that mission in the summer of 1982.
