Firefighter Mark Schwegler gets in a workout at the Engine 106 fire station near Watt and Butano, Friday, August 25, 2000. Despite the inherent dangers in firefighting there are far more applicants for jobs than there are openings. The men in Engine 106 believe that is for several reasons: working hours (10 days a month.24 hour days), good pay, the camaraderie of their fellow workers and the belief by those they serve that they are doing great work. "We're heroes when we show up on a fire scene," is a common sentiment. Sacramento Bee/Jay Mather
