SAD SOLDIER.jpg

Busloads of exuberant soldiers being shuttled from the Ft. Knox military base to Standiford Field for flights home added to Peter Gastin's sadness as he contemplated Christmas away from home. Gastin, of Buffalo, NY, was being transferred from Ft. Gordon, GA to Ft. Knox without holiday leave. Under his duffle bag was another bag, filled with gifts he wouldn't get to personally deliver. Tuesday, December 20, 1977.

Note: After this photo ran in the Louisville Times the Army officials at Ft. Knox rescinded the orders for Gastin and his entire unit. They went home for Christmas.
