David Risling, one of the most respected Native American elders in the world and considered by many as the father of California Indians, returns often to the Hoopa reservation in Humboldt County, CA where he grew up. While there he spends time fishing for salmon and revisiting places and friends in the Hoopa Valley. At nearly 80, Risling continues to champion the causes of Native Americans througout the state and beyond. A former professor at UC Davis for 22 years, he helped establish DQ University and the California Indian Legal Service and many other Indian advocacy organizations. Risling secured the hook to his line while he fished along the Trinity River Saturday, September 23, 2000.
