Cambodian refugees made their way to the refugee camps spread along the Thailand/Cambodian border as North Vietnamese army was overthrowing the Khmer Rouge regime that was responsible for the genocide of 1.7 million citizens between 1975 and 1979. An American emergency room physician from Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Kenneth Rasmussen, joined the International Red Cross and was working in a clinic to help the sick and dying and also provided assistance and counseling for refugees relocating to other countries. He and his wife were also sponsoring a Cambodian family, Sot and Saot Oung and their children resettling in the United States.
